Nerine x Amaryllis-Hybride (Amarine)

|9-cm-Topf|Amarine is a description for hybrids between Amaryllis belladonna (triv. Jersey lily, belladonna-lily, naked-lady-lily, or March lily) and Nerine hybrids and species. Both are endemic to the southern part of the African continent and are very toxic. The extracts of Amaryllis belladonna were formerly used as an arrow poison. In horticulture, nerine was widely hybridized in the past. They are among the most beautiful of the autumn-flowering bulbs and are very popular as cut flowers because they stay fresh for a long time. In our latitudes, these bulbs, with the exception of the hardy species Nerine bowdenii, can not be grown outdoors, as they do not tolerate severe frost. In containers, the bulb should be placed so that the neck is just above the ground. Divide the bulbs after about 5 years or when flowering declines due to crowding. Most species like full sun, however the specific conditions depend on the species. Depending on the variety, plants will bloom for the first time after three to six years.
